Festival Season Is Back

Here’s a roundup of what's going on this summer.

It’s the peak of summer, which can only mean one thing - festival season is back! While the last couple years kept us inside, there’s tons going on this year. Whether it’s celebrating Indigenous culture, the harvest, or just rocking out to local music - these jam packed days are sure to keep you busy.

 

Mackenzie Creek Music Festival

When: July 21-24
Where: South Brant Legion, Oakland

Country music fans need to look no further than Oakland this year for a few days full of live music. This year’s lineup includes Ontario based acts, Allesia Cohle, Paul Anthony, Sylvrado, Three Legged Horse, Rob Watts Band, The Blackstones, among others. Complete with a wing night and an antique car show, the festival offers a 3-night camping pass for $85 or a weekend pass for $45.

Paris Night Market

When: July 22-23
Where: Paris Fairgrounds

After a two-year hiatus, the summer Paris Night Market is finally back! Highlighting area artisans and crafters, the market features live music, a beer garden, food vendors and family-friendly entertainment. The market runs from 5pm to 11pm on July 22nd and 4pm to 11pm on July 23rd. Admission is $10, and free for children under 12.

Six Nations Unity Festival

When: July 22
Where: Gathering Place on the Grand, Six Nations

This year the first ever Six Nations Unity Festival is a display of some of the country's most renowned Indigenous talent. The debut lineup includes musicians Logan Staats, Derek Miller, Lacey Hill, Jace Martin, Semiah Smith, and hoop dancer Ascension Harjo. The show starts at 7pm, and tickets are available at the door for $10.

Grand River Pow Wow

When: July 23-24
Where: Ohsweken Speedway, Six Nations

Started over 40 years ago, the Grand River “Champion of Champions'' Pow Wow has grown to be one of the largest gatherings of Indigenous people in North America. Over the two-day event, visitors can shop at hundreds of vendors selling Indigenous crafts while hearing the distinct sounds of singers and drummers from across the continent. Everyone is welcome, and admission is $10.

Brantford Kinsmen Ribfest

When: August 5-7
Where: Brantford Civic Centre

With a slogan like “It’s All About the Ribs'', you know exactly what to expect at this year’s Ribfest. Follow your nose to try some of the best BBQ around, offered by dozens of competing vendors. This year’s festival features live music, a beer tent, children’s entertainment, and a first-ever Rib Eating Competition.

Country Roots Music Festival

When: August 12-13
Where: Burford Fairgrounds

Lovers of folk, modern country, and southern rock have a lot to look forward to this summer. Headlining this year’s Country Roots Music Festival is five time Juno-nominated, CMA award winner Jason McCoy. McCoy is supported by a lineup including Murray Williams, Mike Pollard, Mackenzie Meyer, among others.

Paris Drinks Fest

When: August 19-20
Where: Lion’s Park, Paris

A celebration full of food, drinks and music sounds like the perfect way to spend an August weekend. The festival has announced Sloan, Terra Lightfoot and Dwayne Gretzky will be headlining the weekend, with additional acts to be announced. While weekend passes are sold out, individual day passes are still available for $49.

Paris Fair

When: September 1-5
Where: Paris Fairgrounds

The Paris Fair is a local tradition that needs no introduction. For the uninitiated, the Paris Fair is a display of Brant County’s agricultural roots - complete with animal displays, a demolition derby, children’s rides, live music, and of course Funnel Cakes. A place where childhood memories are made, the Fair is one last hoorah before the start of a new school year. Admission rates are on a sliding scale depending on age.

St. George Apple Fest

When: September 17-18
Where: Main Street, St. George

A healthy alternative to Ribfest, the abundant apple harvest in our region is a great way to mark the end of summer. At Apple Fest on St. George’s Main Street you can purchase products directly from over a hundred local farmers, bakers, artisans and crafters. The two-day event is completely free and features entertainment for the whole family. With apple cobbler, cider, turnover, chips and pie on the menu - what’s not to love about apples?

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Brantford’s native son, Angel spent much of his life living in the far reaches of Canada. After graduating from Dalhousie University, he began a career as a public servant and later in human rights. Meanwhile, remaining strongly rooted in the arts - DJing, managing musicians, producing films, and performing on Broadway. Angel strongly believes in the power the arts have to inspire, and transform communities and people. He is currently a final year Law student, and is excited to help tell stories from his hometown.
